Thank You Mr. Shangumuham!!!! My answer to You!

SANGKUMUHAM said...
//Geetha Sambasivam!

Nice to read the results of your labors. But I dont know why I have read them at all!//

Mr.Sangumuham,
First of all, I never asked you to read them all. And I am not going to people and asking them to read this, or that. If you are interested in the subject, read it. I am not asking people to comment in favour of it also. Always there are two sides. Some are favouring, some are not. So it is completely your desire. Not mine.

//Will it make me a good person? Suppose it does, how can a person who cant read and write, become a good person? Because, he is what he is! Or, a person whose life is consumed in eking out his mean existence on a measly wages, to fill the stomach of an innocent wife and yet more innoncent children?//

//Your lucubrations are vizallukku iraththa niir. Or, to put it correctly, a luxury for a people who has nothing else to do?//

//God is greater than your lucubrations. Let me sincerely ask you this question:

what is the use of all these luxuriating books written by the godmen, the puraanaas, the vedas, the Bible stories, the gimmicks of mohamed etc.?

What is the outcome for an ordinary person? The question is sincere. Please go over it. In case you need a separate blog topic to answer, please try and make it as such; and put in your thoughts therein. You appear to be an intelligent person. I hope your answer will be illuminating.

I am afraid, without knowing where you are going, it is a wanton dissipation of the precious life God has gifted you!//

//ஸ்ரீஅரவிந்தர் சொல்வது என்னவென்றால்:
the ancient and classical literature of the Sanskrit tongue shows both in quality and in body an abundance of excellence, in their potent orginality and force and beauty, in their substance and art and structure, in grandeur and justice and charm of speech, and in the heightened width of the reach of their spirit which stands very evidently in the front rank among the world's great literatures."

"the vedas, the Upanishadas, the Ramayana, the Mahabharatha, as seen earlier, the Vedas represent "a creation of an early and intuitive and symbolic mentality." It was only because the Vedic rishis were careful to clothe their spiritual experiences in symbols, so that only the initiated would grasp them, that their meaning has escaped us, particularly after they got transtated in the last two centuries. The Veda is the WORD discovering truth and clothing in image and symbol, the mystic significance of life"

"For Indians, the Ramayana embodies the highest and most cherished ideals of manhood, beauty, courage, purity, gentleness. The subject is the same as in the Mahabharatha: the struggle between the forces of light and darkness. but the setting is more imaginative, supernatural and there is an intensification of the characters in both their goodness and evil. As in the Mahabharatha too, we are shown the ideal man with his virtues of courage, selflessness, virtue and spiritualised mind. ......
The puranas, and the Tantras, which contains in themselves the highest spiritual and philosophical truths, while embodying them in forms that are able to carry something of them to the popular imagination and feeling by way of legend, tale, symbols, miracles and parables."
"Valmiki moulded the Indian mind with his depiction of Rama, and Sita, another classic of India's love couples and one that has survived through the muth of enduring worship, in the folklore of this country, along with the polular figures of Hanuman and Lakshmanan. His diction is shaped in the manner of the direct intuitive mind as earlier expressed in the Upanishads."

I am an optimistic person, so no problem . May God Bless All. That is all to say, and thank you for coming to my blog.Of course, it is God's gift, my life, I mean, and Nothing is going to be waste, including my life. Actually I do not want to reply you, but after second thought, I made up my mind.

  1. @geetha madam, This is One of your best post, i say.

All questions has been answered very honestly and clearly with quotes from dignified people. you could have published Mr.shangumuham's comment in the blog and replied him as a separate post as you had done now.

@shangumuham, A post without comments doesn't mean that it was not at all read by anybody and true readers never praise the author in public. :)

Moral values never stick to a person by preaching, but only by reaching!
More than the preach content of these stories, it is the impression that it creates in the wavering mind!

He might see the fruit for himself or it might be there for some unknown face. But that doesnt prevent him from planting the tree. Men may come and men go, but these books go on forever!

  4. Geetha,
It is so noble of you to collect and give Ramayanam in this beautifully written Tamil.
    this effort is not waste.
It does not mean anything if there is no comment.
Imagine the fate of Valmiki Maharishi if he had thought that since no one will take interest in his Ithihaasam,he would not give it to the world.
    God Bless you ma.

    This is from Mr Ambi.

My feeback does appear in full, thanks to the broadmindedness of the blogger, in the posting to which the feeback refers. And, here, she is replying by creating a separate post. What is the problem, Mr Ambi. I dont understand what you mean.

Your direct address to me in the second para baffles me. Is it appropriate to the context? One other feebacker quotes this confusion and asks: repeat! Confusion confounded!! For me. I dont know about others.

  6. The blogger writes:

First of all, I never asked you to read them all. And I am not going to people and asking them to read this, or that. If you are interested in the subject, read it. I am not asking people to comment in favour of it also.

The above is in response to my statement:

But I dont know why I have read them at all.

How did you infer that I am complaining that you have compelled me to read your Ramayanam discourses?

Yours is a blog open to all. Anyone can enter, read and feedback. Either negatively or in favour! Further, you can censore the feedback if you so desire. There is no room for complain from either side: you or the reader!

My statement is, what is called, auto-question. You would have avoided it and gone to other contents in my post, which you have done, thanks.

  7. Will reading the Ramayanam make one a good person? It is my question.

Your answer is, yes, it will. Not only to individuals; but to rulers too.

But you have forgotten to answer the secondary part of the Question about a man whose life is consumed in cares and worries of his duties as a father. He is poor, he is unlettered; and he has no time.

You say, you are rendering a great service through these discourses; and you want to bring the epical truths to the young generations.

In order to benefit from your services, I must be computer-saavy, lettered in Tamil, and some English too, have enough time on hand, and such relaxation as can help me sit before a PC - which I must own, afte spending many thousands of hard-earned rupees, which could have helped me buy some feeding bottles to my babies.

Your niir is selectively channelled and will irrigate only the arable fields which are already awash with abundant supply of water. The barren lands, as they are condemned to be barren by cruel fate or man-made cruelty, is out of your reckoning completely. How idyllic!

  8. The contents of Ramaayaana are not questioned by me. I have read just two versions of the book: one in Tamil by Rajaji; one in English by R.K.Naarayan. I know the story.

My point is not about what is said in the book. Rather, it is to say that without reading such books, it is possible to be a good husband, a good son, a good brother etc.

People have become more clever nowadays. The effect of such books is minimal today. All Indians know more or less the story of Ramayanaa. Most Hindus know it deeper from direct sources; from explicators etc. Have we become good? Have all of them become good?

According to me, there is no quarantee that reading any religious epics can make one good. If a person is good, he is already good.

If someone says he has become good after reading such books, such persons are rare; or, form a minuscule minority.

A St Augustine, who was a libertine, and St Arunagiri, who was a womaniser, or St Thirumankai, also a womaniser, could turn over new lives in thier private lives and become saints. They are miracle humans. Not all of us.

Life has become so different today, and any amount of discourses cant change the mentality.

But you have great hopes. May hopes remain! Why not?

It is something rare to find above confession in aanmiiga bloggers. One is accustomed to see them fanatical about their religion; and its texts. Here, she says that the books should not be taken literally valid line by line. There are things which need to be chopped off. Maybe, they are not so many.

So, it is our business to take only those things which we like and get benefited. A nice point, indeed!

I fully agree with your broadmindedness. But still I wonder, how can an ordinary man be able to differntiate wheat from chaff in such books? Not all of us are endowed with the same ability of discrimination and discernment, arent we, Geetha?

By producing verbatim translations of Valmiiki Ramayana, is it possible to be guided properly? Isn't it like walking over landmines although such mines are few and far between, and almost rare?

Please remember, the Ramaayana is prescibed to school children in all schools, except the schools runs by Christians and Muslims, in States ruled by BJP and also, in Delhi ruled by Congress. It is not a new development as I understand. For many decades, the children have been reading the book as part of their curriculam.

But the Raamaayana is called Spasht Ramaayanaa. 'Essential Ramaayana'. It expunges all that has sexual connotations, war mongering, and things which are repugnant to modern scientific temper, and can be understood only by adult minds. They retain only those things that are required for the story, and also, attacks the minds of children.

Now, coming to your discourses, while you do agree that the book should not be accepted in toto blindly, yet, do you show such discernment and discrimination in your blog? If no, your reproduction of the epic defeats your noble intention.
